3 R's Center Study Guide
1.
HAVE
YOUR OWN STUDY CENTER:
Choose a desk in your room, an area in the kitchen, or any area in the
kitchen, or any quiet place where all you do is study. When you
sit there, you will know it is time to study; it is not time to eat, play,
or watch TV. Get away from any distractions such as television or the
phone. Make sure that you have good lighting and that your work
surface is clean and uncluttered.
Supply
this place with things you need: paper, pencils, erasers, paper clips,
markers, index cards, et.
2.
CHOOSE
A REGULAR STUDY TIME: Decide
the best time to study. Are you
a morning person or a night person? Stick
to the chosen time even if you have no homework.
Do homework first, and then you can study.
Homework: assignments you must turn in the next day.
Study: reading chapters, studying more about a topic you are
having in school, brushing up on things that are hard for you
(multiplication tables, spelling words etc.)
3.
GET
STARTED: Do not put
off what needs to be done until later.
Consult your monthly planner to see if you have forgotten something
important.
Choose one of these
methods:
A)
Do easy assignments first, then concentrate on the hard ones.
B) Do hard assignments first. Do
them before you are tired.
C)
Do one easy assignment first, then a hard one, or vice versa.
4.
TAKE
SHORT BREAKS: several
short sessions are better than one long one.
Take a break every 20 minutes and walk around, get a drink, or do
some stretches. Then go back
to work! You will remember
more if you take these breaks. Commit
things to memory only when you are rested because trying to memorize
difficult things when you are tired is a waste of time.
5.
TO STUDY A NEW
CHAPTER:
-Read the title
of the chapter, all headings, and italicized or bold print.
-Study pictures,
graphs, or charts, and read captions and explanations.
-Read all
definitions, questions, and summaries at the end of the chapter.
Now, READ THE
CHAPTER carefully. You have
already prepared yourself to understand it. Take notes on
the chapter as you are reading it. Use
index cards.
6.
IMPRESS YOUR
TEACHER
-Sit close
to the front so you won’t be distracted.
-Arrive on
time, with completed assignments and all materials you need.
-Make eye
contact with the teacher – listen very carefully.
-Act
interested and you will become more interested.
-Take notes,
ask questions, and show your teacher that you are interested.
-Keep on the subject!
-Write down
your homework assignment on a weekly assignment sheet.
Your
job is being a student!
Your parents have a job and responsibilities at home.
You are preparing now for life and work as an adult.
Be the BEST STUDENT you can be!
You will never regret it later.
