"Train up a child in the way he should go,
even when he is old he will not depart from it."
                                      Proverbs 22:6

“No Time Wasted” is one of the guidelines for instruction.

The 3 R’s Learning Center’s aim is to make instruction more effective by eliminating procedures that haven’t worked with a student and finding a method that will.  Because of learning disabilities, illness, or other circumstances, many students require concentrated, individualized instruction and a different approach.  They become discouraged over academic problems and this discouragement increases each year, until dropping out seems the only solution.  Discouraged students need someone to believe in them and to give them tools to overcome learning problems.  To optimize progress, each student will always receive full attention since instruction is one-on-one.

Reading is the root of success.

The sight method alone is not enough to be a successful reader.  The multi-sensory approach and the emphasis on phonics is needed, especially for those with learning disabilities.  Mastery of high frequency words is another important factor in becoming a fluent reader.  All methods of teaching are considered, according to the need and response of each student.

Center students learn to be “sleuths”, not “sloths”

This is an idea that is appealing and challenging to our students.

This theme develops habits of “investigating” the matter completely when confronted with a problem.  Established patterns of “guessing” can be eliminated when one learns to be a sleuth!  Character building concepts are encouraged; slothful habits are discouraged.  Determination, perseverance, thoroughness, initiative, and diligence are among the traits that are promoted.

History

3 R’s is a private tutoring service begun in October 1985 when Tom and Luraly Graham decided to settle in Cleveland.  Luraly has been tutoring reading, math and written language since 1968.  The Grahams bought a home in January of ’87 and converted their garage into tutoring rooms.  All services were done from the home until August 1994, when the center was moved to downtown Cleveland in the historic Craigmiles building.   In January 1997, the center was relocated to its present location on Mohawk Drive.  In 1999, Luraly discontinued hiring teachers and returned to private tutoring.

The Grahams have a desire to serve the community and want to bring hope and a feeling of being loved to students who have become discouraged by learning problems.  Students who need to be challenged and have enrichment experiences can find help also.
